Mythbusters is back next Wednesday. There is a great interview on the reddit blog with Adam Savage. He did a good ted talk a while ago on his obsessions with the dodo bird and the Maltese Falcon.

I moved house and I am without my beloved broadband. I got myself a three modem… but to be honest.. it sucks. The connection is iffy, the speed is awful (it is meant to be a 3mb connection, but I am yet to see anything over 1mb) most of the time it runs at about 15-30KB.

I am going to get a land line and real broadband as soon as possible. From the looks of things I will be going with UTV. If anyone has a better suggestion, poke me.

Thought this was a worthy cause.

Having been working on a lot of code recently for a site, I got sick of using smultron. It is a good editor… just not what I remember vim being. I found a good native port of vim for mac and it is like the good old days

There are a few small issues though.. mostly to do with the .vimrc file. I used to have one with all my settings and everything just the way I like it… damned if I can find it though. I have been trying to rebuild it over the last couple of days and it has been quite fun actually.

secrets is an app for changing hidden settings in os X. I found this the other day while bored, and I was able to change some things that where bugging me… and some I never thought of. The reason I was looking to change settings was the fact that itunes 8 no longer allows you to hide the genre of music while browsing. Now fixed

Another thing I found was the ability to change the dock to a 2d version.. which, in my opinion looks better than the 3d shelf.

There are many other settings to change.. and, as of now, I have not fully gone through them.

I read yesterday that night clubs are going to lose the late closing hours that they currently have. This baffles me… the closing times they have now are crazily early as it is. The way things stand now, come 2am everyone is dumped into the street and left to their own devices… great idea! Nothing bad could come from this… All those people queueing for food and taxies… of course there is not going to be some idiots that have nothing better to do at this time than start shit… that would never happen.

Making the closing times earlier is only going to increase the chances of trouble. People will drink more in less time and get dumped onto the street with a feeling of being ripped off and not having had enough. According to the irish government this is the way forward… and, as we all know, the people writing the laws are well versed on the realities of their decisions…. well it would only make sense if they where.. right? 

This is a problem with some very simple solutions.. and I have taken the time out of my busy life to figure it out for them:

1) Clubs will remain open much longer then they currently are (this will be left to the descrition of the club owners.. and you know.. the people who work there) , this will allow people to leave when they actually want to and reduce the amount of people on the streets at any given time. 

2) The smoking areas in clubs will be made much bigger, if not the whole club. Giving people who smoke a chance to see more of the club than just a dingy over crowded room. 

3) The door fees for clubs will be abolished (except in certain circumstances.. as shown below) There is really no point to this and the slows the whole process of getting people into the club. 

4) Life music will be provided as often as possible. Listening to a band is always better than some DJ. (door fees are OK for these times.. but that is up to the band)

5) Clubs that stay open past 6am can, if they choose, provide coffee and breakfast for the crowd. This will make the journey home much nicer for all involved. (Door fees are also allowed in this case)

The speakers on my ibook died a few days ago (the earphone jack works fine)… the thought that I should be replacing her has been milling around my mind for a while now. While it is not as fast as most modern laptops.. I still feel attached to her and don’t want to say good bye just yet. 

I have had this ibook for a little over three and a half years now, and.. ignoring the speakers, it is in perfect working condition. I only notice its age when I am streaming some of the higer quality media from the net.. or some flash based sites, but I can live without these things.. seeing as I have a Mac Pro sitting on my desk downstairs. 

I am thinking that I should do a clean install and use yuki (her name) for writing and general use when I am not at home.. ot just don’t feel like going to the mac pro to work. 

One the subject of writing. I have been trying to get back into it recently. I have always had a love / hate relenship with my writing… insofar as I love the act of writing.. and I hate everything I write. I posted some stuff I wrote on my wow guilds forums… not sure if I would ever post anything on the net for all to see….

I was fiddling with some things on the server and accidently killed the old blog. I am going to try and put more effort into this one.
